Continuous watts β how much your appliances draw while running. Think width of the pipe: the station's output rating has to cover it, or it shuts off.
Startup surge β the short spike when a motor kicks on (fridges, freezers, sump pumps). Stations have a separate surge rating for exactly this.
Watt-hours (Wh) β the size of the tank. A 1,152 Wh battery runs a 100 W load for roughly 10 hours after conversion losses. More Wh = more hours.
How accurate is this? Wattages are typical manufacturer values and compressors are billed at actual running time, but batteries age, temperature bites, and duty cycles vary β treat every estimate, including the sims, as roughly Β±15%.
Why don't the hour sliders change the runtime? The headline runtime assumes everything is on at once β worst case. The sliders set how many hours a day you use each appliance, which drives Energy/Day, days of backup on every station card, the outage sims, and whether solar can sustain you.

Plan for at least 2× the runtime you need and check each station's "medical gear alone" line. For life-critical devices, register with HHS emPOWER and your utility's priority list, and keep the FDA outage plan handy. Devices can reset to defaults when power returns.
